Some systematic aspects of self-initiated mobile device use in face-to-face encounters

This contribution is interested in the interactional management of mobile phone use face-to-face encounters. Early observational studies have emphasized tension between participants’ presence “public” spaces and their “private” activities on phones. assumed dichotomy possible conflict different communication involvements will be revisited by using a conversation analytic approach to video recorded everyday encounters among friends family members. Three examples self-initiated text messaging or calling illustrate how which sequential (or other interactional) grounds participants frame for co-present others. More specifically, analysis discuss format respond announcement sequences absence, they can orient users’ accountability.
